SXSW speaker scrambles to change sexist panel title following Twitter backlash

South by Southwest can brag about the diversity of its keynote speaker lineup, but the annual culture, entertainment, and technology conference still managed to slip-up when it came to embracing inclusivity at this year’s show. 

Case in point: One of the panel names at this year’s show was blatantly sexist, and yet, it still managed to be chosen over hundreds of other applications.

Google’s new AI can predict heart disease by simply scanning your eyes

The secret to identifying certain health conditions may be hidden in our eyes. 

Researchers from Google and its health-tech subsidiary Verily announced on Monday that they have successfully created algorithms to predict whether someone has high blood pressure or is at risk of a heart attack or stroke simply by scanning a person’s eyes, the Washington Post reports.

Google’s researchers trained the algorithm with images of scanned retinas from more than 280,000 patients. By reviewing this massive database, Google’s algorithm trained itself to recognize the patterns that designated people as at-risk.  Read more…

George and Amal Clooney just made a huge donation to Florida school shooting survivors

In less than a week, Parkland, Florida, has transformed into the grounds for a new movement  helmed by teenagers who have made it their mission to shift the conversation around gun control and put an end to mass shootings.

These students, survivors of a school shooting that claimed 17 victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, have been organizing on social media and in real life. A rally, March for Our Lives, will take place on March 24— and it just got a major donation boost from George and Amal Clooney.
