Twitter is *finally* profitable for the first time ever

It turns out cutting back, focusing, and maybe a little Donald Trump can help make money.

Twitter reported its first-ever profitable quarter Thursday after more than four years of trading on the public market. The company announced $91 million in profit for the fourth quarter of 2017. Profitability was the #goal, CEO Jack Dorsey told investors in February 2017, and Twitter nailed it. The stock was up by more than 14 percent in after-hours trading.

Monthly user growth remained flat. Twitter announced 300 million monthly active users, the same as last quarter. But it did achieve a 12 percent year over year growth in daily active users. Read more…

Your Amazon Prime monthly plan just got more expensive

People who fear an annual Amazon commitment — get ready to pay the price.

On Friday, Amazon will be hiking the price of monthly Prime memberships by 18 percent in the United States. This means the cost for monthly members will jump from $10.99 to $12.99, according to a report from Recode.

The monthly payment option allows customers who know they’ll only use the service certain times during the year to save some cash, as opposed to committing to the annual membership, which costs $99. That annual membership price is not changing. Read more…

Kodak announces its own cryptocurrency and sees shares rocket

Kodak just became the latest company to jump on the cryptocurrency bandwagon. Like recent random businesses that have embraced blockchain technology, such as Rich Cigars and Long Island Iced Tea, it’s seen its stock rocket.

The photography company, which went bankrupt a few years back after dragging its heels amid the digital revolution, announced KODAKCoin and an accompanying KODAKOne platform Tuesday: a “photo-centric cryptocurrency to empower photographers and agencies to take greater control in image rights management.”

Online graphic design startup Canva is now worth $1 billion

Canva is Australia’s first unicorn of 2018, after raising $40 million (AUD$50.9 million) to push the design startup’s value over $1 billion.

Now available in 190 countries, with over 10 million users, the online design and publishing platform was launched in 2012 by CEO and co-founder Melanie Perkins — now the youngest female entrepreneur to have reached unicorn status.

Trump won an award from the Committee to Protect Journalists

Donald Trump may have delayed his own “MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR,” but in the meantime he’s picked up a coveted prize himself: the Committee to Protect Journalists’ Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom award.

The CPJ announced its own Press Oppressor awards Monday, and Trump joined such illustrious leaders as Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the winners’ podium.
