‘Game of Thrones’ fans have a fascinating theory about the future of the Night’s Watch in Season 8

The Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones left a gaping hole in the Wall, and a huge question to go with it: What will happen to the Night’s Watch now that it appears their watch has not just ended, but failed miserably?

Or, to rephrase, job security is tough when blue fire spitting zombie dragons are flying around, isn’t it?

When the White Walkers first descended on Westeros thousands of years ago during The Long Night, the First Men created the Night’s Watch. More specifically, the Night’s Watch was created after the White Walkers were defeated, in order to man the giant ice wall built to keep them from ever marching south again. Read more…

‘Game of Thrones’ star weighs in on Dany and Jon’s union: ‘It’s going to blow up in their faces’

Davos Seaworth has basically been the lone voice of reason on Game of Thrones since his introduction in Season 2, graduating from advising the terminally stubborn Stannis Baratheon to advising the suicidally stubborn Jon Snow (aka Aegon Targaryen).

Both of those roles were pretty thankless, and now that Jon has decided to unite — politically and, um, physically — with Daenerys Targaryen (aka Jon’s aunt), life’s about to get a lot more difficult for everyone on Team Snowgaryen heading into the final season.

Mashable spoke to Ser Davos himself, Liam Cunningham, in the wake of the Game of Thrones Season 7 finale, to discuss his thoughts on Westeros’ newest incestuous power couple, who will survive Season 8, and whether we’ll finally get to see Cleganebowl.  Read more…

What to expect from ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 after that bonkers finale

This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, episode 7, titled “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

Game of Thrones ended its Season 7 finale with a bang — quite literally, as a large chunk of the Wall that has held the White Walkers at bay for thousands of years came tumbling down, potentially taking the resilient Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion down with it.

(Then again, history has proven that if you don’t see a killing blow on this show, chances are your favorite character will probably make a miraculous reappearance.)

Why White Walkers are winning the war for Westeros

The Game of Thrones power rankings determines which character is most likely to sit on the Iron Throne at the end of the series next year: not the power behind it, but actually ruling as King or Queen of Westeros. Our judgment is based on information officially available at the end of each episode.

You can read the rankings for last week’s episode, “Eastwatch,” here.

That earthquake you felt in “Beyond the Wall,” Season 7’s penultimate episode, was the power balance shifting on the continent of Westeros — in the Night King’s favor.

Dragons have always been Game of Thrones‘ stand-in for weapons of mass destruction — and in that sense, the White Walkers just became the fantasy world’s second nuclear power. And unlike Daenerys, the Night King will not have the slightest compunction about dropping the bomb.  Read more…

George R. R. Martin was dropping clues about the ‘Game of Thrones’ ending back in Season 1

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones Season 7 was arguably the most stressful installment since the Red Wedding — North of the Wall, we saw one of Daenerys’ beloved dragons die, before being resurrected by the Night King, while back in Winterfell, Arya and Sansa escalated their cold war to nuclear levels, all thanks to Littlefinger’s puppeteering.

With only one episode left this season — and only six episodes to come in Season 8  — we’re rapidly approaching the show’s endgame, which means that characters we love are probably going to start dying again, and alliances will be forced to solidify or shatter in the face of the Night King’s advance on Westeros.  Read more…

Is Jaime Lannister about to wake the hell up on ‘Game of Thrones’?

The Game of Thrones power rankings determines which character is most likely to sit on the Iron Throne at the end of the series — not the power behind it, but officially ruling Westeros — based on information available at the end of each episode. You can read last week’s rankings here.

RIP Lady Olenna Tyrell. After just one week as a new entry in the rankings, the rebellious Queen of Thorns made an unexpected exit in “The Queen’s Justice” — all thanks to Jaime Lannister, who (not coincidentally) has made a significant rise in this week’s list.

Read on for our reasoning.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 has been written, but we still don’t know when it’ll air

TwitterFacebook

We’re all freaking out about the impending end of Game of Thrones, but HBO programming president Casey Bloys doesn’t plan to rush any of the proposed spinoffs to air to fill the void.

At the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Wednesday, Bloys revealed that HBO plans to leave “at least a year” between the end of Game of Thrones and the launch of any new companion show.

“The number one priority in all of this is the final season of Game of Thrones, I don’t wanna do anything with a spinoff or anything that detracts or distracts from that,” Bloys told reporters after his executive session. “So that season will happen, and my guess is it would be at least a year before you see anything else. Because what I don’t want is the attention to be drawn from the final season, which I think is gonna be epic and amazing, and somehow have the distraction of a new Game of Thrones airing right after it. I think it’s best to separate them and that’s what we’ll do.” Read more…

These are absolutely, definitively, totally the top 10 ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes. Fight me.

Game of Thrones characters like to obsess over the Iron ThroneGame of Thrones fans like to obsess over the best Game of Thrones episodes. So yes, you might find one or two rankings published elsewhere on the internet.

But how exhaustive is the research? Did the writer really sit down and re-watch all of, say, Season 6, Episode 5 “The Door”, a popular choice for such lists? Or did they just remember the final heartbreaking ten minutes, get a pang at the thought of Hodor and his narratively satisfying story —  forgetting the subpar Arya and Daenerys moments that take up the other 45 minutes?

The final 6 ‘Game of Thrones’ episodes might end up feeling like a full season, thank the gods

TwitterFacebook

As Game of Thrones Season 7 approaches, we can’t help but look ahead to the show’s final year — which may not air until 2019, if we truly are trapped in the Darkest Timeline, which is what it feels like right now.

Season 8 will only be six episodes long (following on from Season 7’s seven installments), and that’s just not enough Game of Thrones for our liking, even if HBO is already hard at work on potential spinoffs.

‘Game of Thrones’ won’t let critics see Season 7 episodes in advance

TwitterFacebook

Game of Thrones has become the great equalizer — it’s the only major TV show that won’t give critics an advanced look at episodes before they air. (Boo-hoo for us, right?)

It may not seem important (or fair, especially when everyone else in the world has to wait), but advanced episode “screeners” do fulfill an important function in helping outlets to shape their coverage, conduct interviews and write reviews — it’s a tough job, we know, but it is a job.

And even in the age of industry hacks and spoiler culture, it’s still a rare thing for critics to be kept in the dark entirely.
