Gotham season 3: big new character confirmed for finale

Rob Leane

May 31, 2017

A new face will appear in the Gotham season 3 finale. Only look if you want to know…

Gotham season 3 finale

Gotham season 3 will end, in the USA, with a double-bill on Fox on Monday the 5th of June.

Here’s the trailer for episode 21 (entitled Destiny Calling) and episode 22 (Heavydirtysoul)…

And here’s the synopsis…

“With the deadly virus spreading throughout the city, the search for the antidote continues, as Fish Mooney (guest star Jada Pinkett Smith), The Riddler and Penguin reveal plans of their own. Bruce meets Ra’s Al Ghul (guest star Alexander Siddig) and completes his last task in order to fulfill his destiny, but realizes he can’t let go of his past. Meanwhile, Gordon tries to win back Lee, and past alliances within Gotham City are broken, while new alliances are formed”

Also, it’s been revealed by David Mazouz that a new character will be showing up in the season finale. Only scroll past our spoiler squirrel if you want to know who it is…

It’s only ruddy Harley Quinn!

MoviePilot reports that young Mr Mazouz spilled the beans at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, which took place in London over the weekend.

“She’s going to be in the finale. Stay tuned”, he said, when asked about the chances of the Joker’s other half appearing on the show.

Mazouz also said this, teasing the finale further…

“Something major happens in the very last scene of Season 3 for Bruce. He makes a decision, that decision will influence what he does. I don’t know what’s happening in Season 4 yet, I haven’t had a script or talked to the writers about what’s going to happen, but where I see it going is somewhere I’ve wanted to see it going for a very long time. You’ll see what I mean. Bruce is going to be very busy taking on this new role that he assumes at the end of Season 3 and I think it’ll be really cool.”

Gotham season 3 air date

Gotham season 3 began – over in the USA – on Monday the 19th of September 2016. We’ll let you know when we hear Channel 5’s UK start date.

Gotham season 3 trailer

Here’s a huge pile of teaser clips for Gotham season 3…

Gotham season 3 images

You can pop into the gallery above to enjoy some snazzy portraits, which have been released to promote the upcoming arrival of Gotham season 3.

Also, a few weeks back, executive producer Danny Cannon took to Twitter to share the first images from Gotham season 3. Here they are, if the images above aren’t enough for you…

Gotham season 3 story

Here’s the synopsis…

“The origin story continues on Season Three of GOTHAM, and the stakes are higher than ever, as Super-Villains more ambitious and depraved are introduced, and a realignment of alliances shakes up the fight for power in Gotham City.

“Season Three will peel back the curtain on the infamous criminal organization known as the Court of The Owls. With the Indian Hill escapees on the loose, JIM GORDON (Ben McKenzie) must take matters into his own hands as a bounty hunter in Gotham. He makes it his mission to find HUGO STRANGE (guest star BD Wong), the mastermind behind the horrifying Indian Hill experiments, and FISH MOONEY (guest star Jada Pinkett Smith), one of Strange’s subjects. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective HARVEY BULLOCK (Donal Logue) and Captain NATHANIEL BARNES (Michael Chiklis) remain at the forefront of the fight against crime in the monster-ridden city. Also, BRUCE WAYNE (David Mazouz), with the help of his trusted butler and mentor, ALFRED PENNYWORTH (Sean Pertwee), and former Wayne Enterprises employee, LUCIUS FOX (Chris Chalk), discovers there are still more secrets to uncover regarding his parents’ murders.

“As the city sinks deeper into chaos, GOTHAM will continue to follow the evolving stories of the city’s most malevolent villains: THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor); EDWARD NYGMA/the future RIDDLER (Cory Michael Smith); SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (Camren Bicondova); BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards), TABITHA GALAVAN/TIGRESS (Jessica Lucas) and BUTCH GILZEAN (Drew Powell). The series also will catch up with the future POISON IVY (Maggie Geha), who, after an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, finds herself reborn as a young woman who’s harnessed the full power of her charms; and will dive into the origin stories of JERVIS TETCH/MAD HATTER (Benedict Samuel), a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness; and the TWEED BROTHERS.”

Gotham season 3 Clark Kent

David Mazouz plays the young Bruce Wayne in Gotham. Ahead of season 3, he’s shared an idea about how the show could work in another of DC Comics’ iconic superheroes as their civilian persona.

“You know, Clark Kent as a teenager saves a busload of kids from drowning, right?” Mazouz asked IGN. “It would just be really cool to just start a scene in the GCPD and just pan, like start on a newspaper that says, ’15-Year-Old Boy in Metropolis Saves Busload of Kids From Drowning.’ And then just pan up and have a regular scene that has nothing to do with the … throw a little hint […] Easter eggs. Referring to the fact that Gotham is a part of a larger DC Universe.”

And if TV’s Gotham is twinned with Metropolis a la Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Mazouz noted, “it wouldn’t be that hard to take a boat ride over for Clark.”

Not a bad idea, that. Maybe Mazouz should try his hand at writing.

Gotham season 3 villains

Harley Quinn will join the show, it’s been confirmed, following the character’s huge spike in fan numbers following Suicide Squad

“You may have already seen Harley as a person that you thought you had met and known for a long time. So we always reserve the right to sort of do that”, Ken Woodruff (another executive producer) told IGN.

John Stephens added this: “We don’t want to give too much away but it will definitely be someone connected to the Joker cult world that we have set up. But it’s down the road, later in Season 3 right now.”

Our best guess for the Harley-in-the-making? Erin Richards’ Barbara Kean. But is that too obvious? We’ll have to wait and see.

It also looks like Cameron Monaghan is set to return as Jerome, his proto-Joker who was last seen bloody and dead near the start of season 2. Here’s Monaghan’s Instagram post, which turned a return for Jerome from a popular rumour into – seemingly – a dead cert…

Gotham season 3 Ra’s al Ghul

In other news: he’s already appeared in the Nolan-verse and the Berlanti-verse, and now the mighty Ra’s al Ghul is heading for Gotham.

This will mark another recasting and rebooting of the Ra’s role, with Alexander Siddig of Game Of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, Clash Of The Titans and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine taking on the part, stepping into the shoes of Liam Neeson and Matt Nable.

“I really tried to be as ambiguous as possible,” Siddig told Digital Spy about his performance. “I’ve only done two episodes and as an actor in episodic television, I don’t know what the next script is, so I’m confronted with finding a way to play something really dark in a more ambiguous way.”

“I really tried to get him so ambiguous that he’s almost liquid – that was the way I thought about it,” Siddig added. “You’re really not sure if he’s good or bad – no one knows whether he’s a demon or a saint, or a ghost, that’s a line from the script.”

Previously, Comic Book Resources reported that “Ra’s will be introduced as Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) pulls the veil of the Court of Owls to discover the man pulling its strings. Leader of the League of Shadows, the enigmatic and powerful Ra’s al Ghul will quickly prove himself to be Bruce’s most dangerous adversary yet.”

It’s interesting that they’re going with the Nolan-favoured ‘League Of Shadows’ name here, instead of the comics-accurate ‘League Of Assassins.’ Perhaps Ra’s’ true nature will be kept under wraps for a while, explaining why Siddig is keeping things ambiguous.

Gotham season 3 cast

Collider reports that James Remar of The Grid, Sex And The City, Jericho and Dexter has joined the cast of Gotham season 3. He’ll play Frank Gordon, an uncle of Jim’s.

Here’s the official character description…

“Frank Gordon: Jim’s uncle, Frank Gordon, is a master at playing both sides and a man who knows how to keep a secret. Frank abandoned the family after Jim’s father’s fatal car crash and now, twenty-five years later, he’s returned to reconnect with his estranged nephew. But Frank harbors a dark secret, one that will upset the very foundations of Jim’s world and force him into a terrible choice between saving his family and saving his city.”

Riverdale season 2 will be “darker and stranger”

Rob Leane
John Saavedra

May 31, 2017

Cole Sprouse, aka Jughead, has teased a “darker and stranger” Riverdale season 2, doubling down on what the fans love…

The CW’s Riverdale series – which is hosted by Netflix on this side of the pond – will be back shortly for its second season. Jughead actor Cole Sprouse has been teasing what to expect.

“I think the whole show is going to be getting darker and stranger,” the Jughead actor told TV Line.

“We’re going to be leaning into a lot of those qualities that a lot of people ended up loving in the first couple of episodes — this heavy cinematography, this overbearing coloration, this really dark content that’s kind of over-the-top and campy, but it’s taken very seriously,” he added.

Sounds good to us! We’ll bring you more snippets from the cast as we hear them.

Riverdale season 2 cast

It’s been confirmed that Ross Butler will not return as Archie’s enemy, Reggie Mantle. the role will be recast, because Butler’s schedule is too packed.

Butler recently starred in 13 Reasons Why on Netflix, which is also due for a second season in the near future – that’s what’s keeping him from returning to Riverdale.

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had this to say, CBR reports:

“We want more Reggie on our show — he’s Archie’s rival! — and because Ross is unavailable to come back to Riverdale, we’re looking for a new Reggie. Those are big shoes to fill, but we’re confident we can find an actor who is as funny and sexy as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best.”

There’s no word yet on who’ll be stepping into the role, but we’ll keep you posted.

We would expect Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and the rest of the non-Reggie recurring players to return in season 2.

Riverdale season 2 renewal

The CW’s newest comic book-inspired drama, Riverdale, has been renewed for a second season, as confirmed by Archie Comics’ official Twitter handle:

This take on the world of Archie is essentially a combination of the melodrama featured on Gossip Girl and the murder mystery setup of Twin Peaks. Of course, it’s not the first show to blend teen angst with noir elements, but it certainly mixes them well. And Riverdale has been doing well in terms of ratings, too.

The pilot pulled in 1.4 million viewers, and has averaged about 1.2 million since. It’s currently The CW’s second most-watched non-superhero series. Riverdale is the brainchild of Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the writer behind the resurgence of Archie Comics in recent years with great horror comics Afterlife With Archie and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.

Riverdale season 2 release date

No release date has been set for Riverdale season 2. It’s probably safe to assume that the second season will premiere on The CW at some point in 2018. Presumably, Netflix will continue streaming the show here in the UK.

Pierce Brosnan’s tribute to Roger Moore

Simon Brew

May 31, 2017

From one James Bond to another, Pierce Brosnan pens some words of appreciation about the late Roger Moore…

The outpouring of affection towards Roger Moore following his death last week at the age of 89 has seen some lovely stories doing the rounds. And now Pierce Brosnan has added a few warm words too.

Brosnan, chatting to Variety, revealed that Moore came to visit him on the set of his first 007 movie, GoldenEye. He popped in to wish Brosnan well in the role, with the latter writing that “I was still in awe of the man”.

It’s part of a lovely tribute that Brosnan’s written, revealing that Roger Moore is the only actor whose autograph he ever asked for, back when he was 12 years old.

“Many years later I was a working actor with a wife and children, and Roger and his Bond came to save the day. My late wife, Cassie, and our family were living in Wimbledon. I had just finished a yearlong run in the West End with a production of Philomena directed by Franco Zeffirelli. And then nothing – no work”, Brosnan recalled.

“One day, Cassie got an audition for a James Bond movie called For Your Eyes Only, and bingo, we were off to the races once more. The film shot in Corfu. Cassie played Lisl von Schlaf – not a great name, but what a great time. By then Roger was the man – the world was at his feet. He was most gracious to the children and myself”.

“We fell in love with a magnificent actor”, Brosnan wrote. “Never forgetting the audience, never letting the begrudgers in, Sir Roger enthralled the world for many years as Bond. Sir Roger played it to the end with impeccable good manners and a wicked sense of irony that was born of years upon the stage. He saved our world, for heaven’s sake, with his movies as James Bond”.

The full tribute can be found here. Rest in peace, Mr Moore.

David Lynch reckons movie trailers are “really harmful”

Simon Brew

May 31, 2017

David Lynch has a few words to say about the modern movie trailer…

It’s long accepted now that a modern blockbuster movie needs three full trailers as a rule of thumb, with trailers for trailers to tease them in the first place. The three core trailers may have fancy names – teaser trailer, full trailer, payoff trailer, final trailer – but they’re all doing pretty much the same job. And spoiling things, a good deal of the time.

For they also have a habit of giving lots of the game away, and that’s something that irks, amongst others, David Lynch. Lynch has just launched his new series of Twin Peaks, with barely a hint of anything revealed about the show before it premiered. And whilst he has no plans to make more movies, Lynch – chatting to Rolling Stone – certainly has a word or two to say about the modern movie trailer.

“These days, movie trailers practically tell the whole story”, he lamented in the interview. “I think it’s really harmful. For me, personally, I don’t want to know anything when I go into a theatre. I like to discover it, get into that world, try to get as good of picture and sound as possible, no interruptions – so you can have an experience. And anything that putrefies that is not good”.

Given that a trailer is regarded as the prime piece of marketing for a movie, nothing is likely to change there anytime soon. But it’s hard not to see Lynch’s point of view…

Edge Of Tomorrow to be a “two-movie franchise”

Simon Brew

May 31, 2017

No cinematic universe here. Doug Liman says Edge Of Tomorrow 2 will round off the series…

Well, this feels unusual. In an era of cinematic universes and sequels that only stop when the box office takings dry up, we’ve got a filmmaker who reckons that their film needs one sequel, and that’s it. That filmmaker is director Doug Liman, and that sequel will be Edge Of Tomorrow 2.

“I see this as a two-movie franchise”, he declared, noting that it’ll round off the story set up in the first film, and that it’ll pick up immediately following the ending of the first Edge Of Tomorrow. No spoilers to that ending here, save to say there’s a very natural pick-up.

The sequel will feature Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt returning, but Liman – chatting to MTV – also revealed that he’s going against convention for his follow-up. “I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I’m like ‘no, a sequel should be smaller’”, he explained.

“You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge Of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation”, he said. “So we can do way more focus on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s going for sure steal the movie …. I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes”.

Liman didn’t expand on who would be playing the third character, or give further details there. That information will follow in due course.

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 is likely to be in the queue behind Top Gun 2 for Tom Cruise though, and he’s got to finish Mission: Impossible 6 off first. Our best guess would be that Edge Of Tomorrow 2 starts filming next year. Don’t hold us to it.
